Words: Dr. John Park

A jammed finger or injured toe can make ordinary grappling tasks difficult: gripping a sleeve, posting a hand, or pushing off the mat. Small joints deserve serious attention, especially when an injury changes movement, sensation, or alignment.

Dr. John Park's feature discusses common injuries, first aid, rehabilitation, and prevention. The guidance here has been updated: a suspected dislocation is not something to pull back into place yourself, and concerning symptoms should not be left untreated for weeks.
