Two pioneers collide May 16 in Netflix’s first MMA event

The collision course that began more than a decade ago has finally reached its destination.

Both women stood face to face this week during the official press conference announcing their bout, which is scheduled for May 16 at the Intuit Dome in Inglewood, California. The fight will headline Netflix’s first live mixed martial arts event, promoted by Most Valuable Promotions.

For fans who have followed the evolution of women’s MMA, the moment felt like history catching up with itself.

This matchup has been talked about for years.

Now it’s real.

The Fight That Was Always There

Carano explained that the opportunity came directly from Rousey, who personally reached out to propose the fight.

“I get to live once,” Carano said. “This makes me feel so alive.”

Carano admitted she had stepped away from the idea of fighting years ago. But the chance to share the cage with Rousey changed everything.

“I didn’t know I needed this so bad.”

For Carano, the return is less about nostalgia and more about rediscovering something she always loved.

“It’s not that I need it. It’s that I want it.”

Rousey said the comeback was never something she planned.

“I never thought I would come back,” she told reporters.

Her path back to the sport started quietly. Teaching martial arts again and reconnecting with the technical side of combat reminded her why she loved it in the first place.

Then she saw an interview with Carano.

That moment sparked something.

“We both needed to reclaim our identity and rewrite our endings together,” Rousey said.

Rousey also acknowledged something many fans already knew. Carano played a major role in inspiring her original move into MMA.

“I would not have known women’s MMA existed if it wasn’t for her.”

Respect… and Competition

Despite the respect between them, neither fighter framed the bout as a ceremonial matchup.

Carano made that clear.

“I’m definitely coming to win.

Rousey echoed the same sentiment, saying the fight is the one matchup that always stayed in the back of her mind throughout her career.

“This is the fight I always wanted.”

For two athletes who helped build the modern era of women’s MMA, the bout represents both closure and competition.

Ngannou Joins the Card

The press conference also confirmed another major fight.

Former UFC heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou will face Felipe Lins as part of the event.

Ngannou addressed the shifting business landscape in MMA and the growing opportunities for fighters outside traditional promotions.

“We are independent contractors,” Ngannou said. “If we don’t get what we deserve, we should be able to go somewhere else.”

Ngannou also made one thing clear.

“I’m not done.”

Promoted by Most Valuable Promotions, the company founded by Jake Paul and Nikisa Bidarian, the card is being positioned as a major moment in the evolution of combat sports broadcasting.

Additional fights are expected to be announced in the coming weeks.

But the spotlight will remain firmly on the main event.

Rousey vs. Carano.

A matchup fans have imagined for more than a decade.
