Varela vs. Haddad: Friends Collide in Chaos and Calm
Welterweight 2-seed Andy Varela entered with swagger and a game built on pace. Across from him stood 7-seed Nathan Haddad, a lifelong martial artist from Kentucky who thrives on wrestling exchanges and quiet confidence.
Round one was a hand-fighting chess match. Haddad snapped, fainted, and answered Mikey Musumeci’s playful shouts of “throw the sand” with steady collar-tie work.
The second round changed everything. Varela hit a slick duck-under, took the back, and finished with a rear-naked choke. “I hit him with my instant transmission to the back, Goku style teleport,” Varela joked.
Haddad accepted defeat with grace. “It’s a game of millimeters. I gave everything I had,” he said. Varela moves on to the welterweight semifinals, calling out Dana White for a shot on the big stage.
Morera vs. Rios: Pressure vs. Persistence
Brazil’s Denilo Morera met Mexico’s Mauricio Rios in a technical lightweight battle. Morera’s relentless passing and top pressure clashed with Rios’s stubborn leg-lock counters.
Across three rounds Morera dictated the pace, stacking passes and forcing Rios to defend. Rios nearly found a heel hook but could not finish. Judges awarded Morera a unanimous decision. “I wanted the submission, but I dominated the whole match,” he said.
Rios left with his head high: “I had nothing left in my tank. I’m okay with it. I gave everything I had.”
Dinner, Jokes, and Arm-Wrestling
Both teams later shared a meal, laughing over inside jokes and a spontaneous coaches’ arm-wrestling showdown. Mikey Musumeci versus Rerisson Gabriel. Gabriel took the win, adding lighthearted bragging rights to the evening.
What’s Next? Semifinal Showdowns
- Welterweight: Elijah Carlton vs. top seed Andrew Tackett, though Carlton’s arm injury threatens his run.
- Lightweight: Denilo Morera vs. Kievon Gonzalez, two finishers, one spot in the final.
Episode 7 promises medical drama, high-stakes grappling, and the last hurdle before UFC BJJ 1. Don’t blink.
